In January we published the first of our 12 blog posts about Face Pilates for anti ageing, stopping sagging, lifting and skin care and Head Massage for the promotion of hair growth and hair conditioning.
So let’s start at the beginning!
Since when have facial exercises existed?
We are always reminded that we should exercise our bodies but what about our faces?
Exercising the muscles on your face should be a weekly ritual and the benefits are more than you expect!
The first obvious reward is that it helps turn back the clock on the ageing process, but it’s not just all about looks. When you do the Face Pilates routine you will stimulate the blood flow to the skin which will improve the texture, tone and also reduce wrinkles.
You will use breathing and relaxation techniques as you go through each
program and this will allow you to focus on your posture and relieve stress.
It is a gift of health not just for your face but for your body and your mind.
Believe it or not, facial exercises have been around for more than 50 years! The idea of working the muscles of the face to enhance youthful looks, improve the skin texture and lift the muscles was first commercially developed and proven to make a long lasting difference by Senta Maria Rungé who published her book, Face Lifting by Exercise, in the 60’s. She spent three decades scientifically researching her method and was eventually featured in Vogue Magazine bringing the fashion of facial exercise to the American public. She had her own television spot demonstrating her technique and was sort after by celebrities and personalities in her salon in Hollywood. Today her book still has a healthy following and is even recommended to patients by surgeons, post facial surgery.
Another veteran of the facial exercise trend is Eve Fraser. In 1990 at the mature age of 50 Eve opened her Facial Fitness studio in London. Eve says she was fortunate to be taught about facial exercises by ballet dancer Madame Eva Hoffman whom she met in 1978 and who had developed her own method of facial exercises with the assistance of a doctor way back in the 1930’s. Eve Fraser is now in her 80’s and believes you are never too young or too old to start exercising your facial muscles. She is testament to the dedication to facial exercises as she looks like she is in her 50’s despite being 87 years of age in 2015.
Thirty years on in 2011 Mandy Keillor, with the help of another dancer and Pilates instructor Paola Chavez, developed Face Pilates. After hosting an Ayurvedic facial yoga class at Studio Australia Barcelona the previous summer it ignited a following and with just one lesson people wanted more! But rather than following the spiritual practice of Yoga they developed a unique style of facial exercises based on the principals of Pilates.
A natural alternative to invasive surgery and fillers, facial exercises are a proven risk free way to enhance your facial features, improve the texture of your skin and retain or regain youthful looks with just a little dedication each week. You work the muscles of your body for definition, strength health and wellness, why would you neglect your face?
What are the benefits of Face Pilates?
SO, what is Face Pilates?
It’s a series of facial exercises that are specifically designed to teach you how to work the muscles and the skin of your face using your fingers and facial expressions. The interesting thing about the skin on your face is that it is attached to the muscle so as it sags and loses elasticity as we age our muscles are pulled down.
The solution? Work the muscles to pump them and lift the skin!
What can Face Pilates do for you?
• A 100% natural anti-aging tool!
• Increases blood circulation and nourishes cells.
• Lifts the muscles and reduces sagging.
• Improves skin condition by carrying nutrients to the skin.
• Reduces wrinkles and lines.
• Relieves stress and removes tension from the face.
• Relaxes the mind and the body.
The results are noticeable in weeks, especially because our face generally doesn’t have very much fat covering the muscle so the results show much quicker. In fact, when you do the entire Face Pilates routine you will notice the difference from one side to the other as you go through the workout!
If you have skin conditions such as acne, rosacea or psoriasis please consult your dermatologist before doing facial exercises.
We recommend that you work your entire face once a week and focus on those ‘special areas’ of your face during your daily body and face care routine at least 3 times a week.
This month, we will have a video to show you how to find the correct muscle insertions on your face. This way you can really benefit and quickly see the results from each facial exercise treatment you give yourself!
In the meantime you can go to YouTube to learn more about our Face Pilates exercise routines!
